Why calorie estimates change—even when the math is correct
A calculator is a reasonable first hypothesis. Your repeated intake and weight trends are better evidence for what your body is doing now.

The short answer
Estimated maintenance calories can change because the first equation has individual error, activity varies, measurements are noisy, and energy expenditure responds to changes in body mass and behavior. A revised estimate is not proof that the first one was useless.
The equation describes a population, not you
Resting-energy equations are fitted from groups. A systematic review found Mifflin–St Jeor reliable among common options, but meaningful individual prediction error remained.
Activity labels are broad
Two people can choose the same category while differing in walking, standing, training intensity, work, and recovery. Those differences compound across a week.
Food and weight data are noisy
Portion estimates, restaurant recipes, missed bites, sodium, carbohydrate storage, digestion, and menstrual-cycle changes can move intake records and scale weight without matching tissue change.
Energy expenditure can adapt
Body mass, spontaneous movement, and the energy cost of activity can change during loss or gain. A fixed daily deficit is therefore not an exact long-term timeline.
A better way to use the estimate
- 1. Start with a transparent formula and a conservative goal.
- 2. Track consistently enough to make the data interpretable.
- 3. Use a multi-day weight trend, not a single weigh-in.
- 4. Adjust gradually when repeated evidence supports a change.
The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases uses a dynamic model in its Body Weight Planner, reflecting that weight change is not a static calorie conversion.
